3 Million Subscribers Subreddit Milestone Megathread

3 Million Subscribers!!! It's been nearly two years since we've celebrated the previous milestone of 2 million subscribers and a lot has happened since then: the launch of new consoles that they won't let people buy for some reason, a worldwide pandemic that kept us stuck at home to play Animal Crossing, and the widening spread of an important civil rights movement that still persists today. What have we been up since then? Well, read on and find out! Community Member Spotlight This subreddit would not be what it is today without the countless hours of volunteering that the community members put in. From putting a lot of effort into making sure there is a variety of content being submitted, to helping out with events like E3 and publisher events, you all are invaluable to the community. Thank you for your time spent making this a better place and thank you especially for your patience dealing with us. Just to name a few (but not all) folks who have put in a lot of time and effort to this subreddit: /u/harushiga, /u/NYstate, u/Turbostrider27, /u/NeoStark, /u/Shinobihost, /u/The_Iceman2288, /u/Mront, /u/The_King_of_Okay, /u/no1dead, /u/hadronwulf, /u/ak47rocks1337yt, /u/jasonj2232, /u/ninjyte, and /u/diogenesl! Down Memory Lane... Speaking of great community members, this subreddit is also driven by the content our community shares. Here are a few of our own favorite submissions from the subreddit in the past two years: * Horse Games Are Trash and I'm Pissed Off * Review Threads! * Obscure Youtube game critics and underrepresented game genres or niches on Youtube. * Research on how The Last of Us part 2's marketing and release influenced the popularity of the songs featured in it. * 2011 Retrospective * A story about six online pvp games with outstanding mechanics and concepts that are lost in history of pc gaming. * Opening the 5 year old /r/Games time capsule... We've also hosted a variety of AMAs in the past, including... * Jeff Vogel, founder of Spiderweb Software * Developers of Dead Cells, a metroidvania inspired, action-platformer roguelite * Chris Wilson of Grinding Gear Games, developer of Path of Exile * Developers of Fallen London, a browser game with over 2.5 million words * Goichi Suda, aka SUDA51, president of Grasshopper Manufacture Do you have any posts that stuck out to you that you think are great examples of what this subreddit is about? Please share them in the comments! Community Initiatives This past year and some change we've started off a mostly monthly program called Meta Mondays where we get either focused or free range feedback for various aspects of the subreddit. Topics have ranged from consistency in moderation to feedback regarding specific types of submissions. Overall, we consider this program a success: we've implemented several changes based on feedback given. Some of the recent changes we have made based on feedback from the Meta Mondays... * Update Rule 8 - We know quite a few users wanted us to be a bit more forgiving towards folks who are just fans of games. Previously, we enforced a "topics" clause that ended up ensnaring a few super fans in Rule 8 and to put it lightly, everyone disliked that. Now, if you really, really, really like Final Fantasy or if you are the biggest fan of Metroid and your submission history is full of discussions about those games... Rule 8 will no longer discriminate against you so readily... as long you're not spamming! * Better Response Time to Rulebreaking Submissions - When submissions that break our rules are left up too long, the removal of those discussions is often controversial and ultimately frustrating. We believe that the strict application of our rules is paramount to the core of the subreddit so rather than turn blind eyes to rule breaking content, we have recruited more moderators so that we can deal with rule-breaking content before it's too late. Training new moderators in the subreddit has a bit of a warm up period so if you notice any bumpy moderation within the past month or so, our apologies. Here are our newest recruits to our ranks... /u/Whiteness88, /u/Carlboison, /u/Cactus_Bot, /u/Dandy_Taters, /u/Mikempty, /u/serenity-as-ice, /u/nismotigerwvu, /u/ak47rocks1337yt, /u/Jim777PS3, /u/techgeek89, /u/ploakimon, /u/Kighte, /u/The_Back_Burner, and /u/Edgar_Scott. Some of our moderators took a temporary leave of absence but they have such a strong case of Stockholme Syndrome that they felt compelled to return to help us: /u/team56th, /u/PhazonJim, and /u/obeseninjao7. Please encourage them to stay with us forever. In addition to Meta Monday, we've established a new weekly initiative called Indie Sundays where we are relaxing Rule 8 a bit for smaller developers to share their games with the community. While we consider the event to be an overall success, the event generated a lot of fantastic feedback that we want to incorporate: we are currently reworking the event for this coming weekend so stay tuned to see the results of your direct feedback! Furthermore, we're in the process of putting together a new initative... Stay tuned for more information on that in the near future! While you're here... is there anything you'd like for us to explore as an intiative for the subreddit? Let us know! Playing in a Pandemic So, while we've been busy staying home, wearing masks, and getting vaccinated... we've been a bit busy playing some games when we're not moderating the subreddit! Our indie darlings have kept us sane and hopefully you'll check them out too! * Hades * Loop Hero * Boyfriend Dungeon * Dreamscaper * Spiritfarer * Witcher 3 * Mundaun * Little Nightmares 2 * The Forgotten City * Death's Door * Say No! More and of course, everyone's favorite: Stardew Valley. Who knew farming pixels could be so cathartic? What indie games have you been exploring while stuck at home? Thank You Of course, thank you to everyone who's joined us so far. Here's to another million and another year of games. Stay tuned, we got more for you in just a little bit! submitted by /u/rGamesMods [link] [comments]
