Hey! I’m the mostly-solo dev behind Pawnbarian. I self-published it on Steam just under 3 months ago and it’s currently sitting at 94% positive reviews.
It’s a small game, but a bit hard to describe in straightforward genre terms without turning into a buzzword salad. It plays like a tight tactical roguelike in the vein of Into the Breach or Hoplite, with some chess and Slay the Spire mixed in.
The core idea is that you play cards to control your warrior like a chess piece, moving and attacking enemies which have various abilities that you need to strategize around, and try not to die horribly. You play the game in bite-sized, ~15 minute runs. In that time you battle your way through several increasingly difficult floors, pick up some upgrades, and face a brutal boss fight.
There are a few different characters and dungeons to pick from, which substantially mix up the gameplay. Otherwise the runs are mechanically similar, perhaps more like a solo boardgame than a complex roguelike.
I’m still actively working on the game. I just implemented gamepad support, and over the next few months I plan on expanding the content a little, and releasing on other platforms.
Hope you give it a try! And of course happy to answer any questions. submitted by /u/acguy
