Last week Star Citizen devs completed the first functional test of their Persistent Entity Streaming (PES) system which will be made available on the test branch to backers in a few months. This system will allow for indefinite long term persistence of all items in the game, anywhere in the world.

The new information starts in "Road to 4.0" Its quite long a technical so I will give my best TLDR, but I may make mistakes. * Last week SC devs demonstrated their persistence system * This system will, according to CIG, allow any and all items in the world to be tracked and persistent indefinitely (though they discuss cleanup by AI, or low priority items (trash) despawning over time * This technology makes up 8/12 of the core services they need as part of the later Server Meshing technology * This is expected to go into backer hands in an extended test branch phase lasting 3+ months while the public facing branch is updated with content. These will be merged eventually when 3.18 is stable and ready for public use. * This 3.18 test will include the first version of ship salvage as physical inventory * Will also include finishing the overhaul to gen 12 renderer tech (which is ground work needed to implement Vulkan) The rest of the post includes interesting information for their plans after this point, however, i think that is the beyond the scope of interest for /r/games and likely more years away.
