Recursive Ruin - BIT ROT - A Narrative-driven Kaleidoscopic Puzzle Game

Hello! I'm Chad McKinney, one half of BIT ROT, a studio I formed together with my twin brother Curtis McKinney. We come from a background in music composition and music technology research, finding ourselves eventually in the games industry and now releasing our first indie game! Introducing Recursive Ruin! (Trailer) The game is admittedly a strange beast. The way we like to pitch it is if Gone Home was stapled to Portal, but directed by David Lynch. At its core, Recursive Ruin's gameplay revolves around infinite recursion, which in essence involves traveling across an infinitely nested space, and somehow ending up where you started. It’s kind of like a Russian nesting doll that goes on forever. Thankfully, you have the uncanny ability to shift the world, allowing you to traverse the infinite loops. You'll have to get past obstacles in creative ways, using your abilities and the world itself. We wanted the puzzles to push you to think in different ways, often challenging your fundamental notions of spatial reasoning. That said, Recursive Ruin is just as much a narrative game as a puzzle game. The story can be challenging, but it is one that we think will resonate with a lot of people out there. There's also a talking cat named Behemoth. Lastly, as you might imagine, the game's music was incredibly important to us. Our process includes a mixture of traditional composition and procedural techniques, leveraging a custom music and audio DSP language we wrote named Necronomicon. The trailer we linked above includes some excerpts, though the soundtrack in the game has a wide range, from soft acoustic pieces to heavy electronic textures. We've worked on Recursive Ruin for a while now, and I'm super happy to see it finally released. If the above was at all interesting to you, I'd urge you to check it out!
