A big, fat list of non-scary and scary games to play this October (2022)

Hello there! I posted this on another subreddit but I thought I would share this here as well. I took an older post of mine, updated it, added some links, and formatted it in a way that makes it easier to read. I also added a list of spooky/halloween levels in non- spooky games. Non scary games: Game Description Link Castlevania series Series about a guy with a whip in a castle filled with enemies inspired by movie monsters. Great gameplay and music. You have to play at least one of the 2D games Anniversary, Super Ghouls and Ghosts(SNES) A pretty hard game where you fight monsters to save the princess The remake Zombies Ate My Neighbors(SNES) Loved this 2D run & gun where you must find and save your neighbors before they are killed by classic movie monsters who are roaming the map Haunting starring Polterguy(Genesis) Control a poltergeist in a house and try to scare people to death Porky Pig’s Haunted Holiday (SNES) 2D platformer with Porky Pig Nosferatu(SNES) like a horror Prince of Persia(DOS) Super Metroid(SNES) A nonlinear 2D action side scroller where you fight monsters on an alien planet. God I love this game Decap Attack(Genesis) 2D platformer where you can throw your mummy head at enemies Splatterhouse 2(Genesis) Take control of a Jason type killer in this Sega beat em up DemonCrest(SNES) 2D platformer where you play as the gargoyle from Ghouls and Ghosts Medievil 1 & 2 (PS1) Hack n slash where you play Sir Dan, a hero that died in battle whose accomplishments might have been a tad embellished. Now raised from the dead years later, he must defeat the evil sorcerer and prove that he is worthy of the glory he was given posthumously. Tiny Toon Adventures: Toonstein a haunted game of hide n seek in this point and click game. Jersey Devil(ps1) Halloween themed 3d platformer where you play as the Jersey Devil Twisted Metal series(PS1 & PS2) drive around and blow up other vehicles in this car combat game that has some good twisted lore/stories. Heart of Darkness(PS1) platformer where you rescue your dog from shadow creatures Darkstalkers 2(PS1) a 2D horror themed fighting game Blood Omen:Legacy of Kain(Ps1) Top down RPG where you play as a vampire on a quest for revenge Legacy of Kain:Soul Reaver(Ps1) sequel to blood omen but is a 3d action game. steam Zelda: Majora’s Mask(N64) A creepier sequel to Ocarina of Time, Link is forced to relive the same 3 Days over and over in an attempt to stop the apocalypse. Scooby Doo Classic Creep Capers(N64) One of a few Scooby Doo games worth playing. 3D puzzle solving game. Spirits & Spells(PS2) a pretty short, cute little 3d platformer with halloween aesthetic Disney’s Haunted Mansion(GC) WAAAY better than the movie and takes place in the past. A 3D action game where you solve puzzles. Great spooky atmosphere Luigi’s Mansion(GC) Luigi, as a ghostbuster, has to clear out the boo’s from the mansion and save Mario! Scooby Doo:Night of 100 frights(PS2,GC) Scooby Doo again! This one is more platformer oriented. Darkwatch(PS2) Fight gothic monsters in this western first person shooter(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEh2VmEuZaI) Folklore(PS3) 3rd person action adventure game where you unravel a mystery that involves characters from Grimm fairy tales Grabbed by the Ghoulies(xbox) play as a boy trying to rescue his girlfriend who was grabbed by the ghoulies. Action 3rd person game (added) Stubbs the Zombie Play as a zombie wreaking havoc in the 50's. steam Voodoo Vince Hurt enemies by hurting yourself! Steam Dark Souls series, Bloodborne,Sekiro Fight monsters in bleak worlds. Embrace dying 1, 2,3,Sekiro, Dead Rising series fun game where you have tons of ways to kill the crowds of zombies that fill your screen. 1,2,2OTR, 3 The darkness 2 first person shooter where you can control shadow-like creature arms coming out of your body Vermintide 1 & 2 Like left 4 dead but with warhammer 1, 2 Diablo 2 Classic CRPG. You travel through different lands to thwart the forces of The Burning Hells from conquering the world known as Sanctuary Activision shop Grim Dawn Diablo-like game but way more recent. Steam Hunt Showdown Hunt and kill monsters but be on the lookout for enemy teams moved to kinda scary list steam Hollow Knight A modern metroidvania that has a great dark atmosphere steam Alice:Madness returns Alice in wonderland with a horror twist in this hack n slash game. Also if you can find it, the first game, American McGee's Alice, is great to play steam. Don’t Starve(Together) 2D survival game with a Tim Burton-esque aesthetic. Don’t starve, DS:together Harry Potter games(including the Lego ones) You’re a wizard Harry Lego 1-4,Lego 5-7 Overlord Pikmin type game where you play as an evil overlord who can control his goblin minions steam Gears of War 1 3rd person shooter where you fight the monster-like Locust army. The first game has a twinge of horror that isn’t scary but is great to play this month. Life is Strange Graphic adventure video game that has a great indie soundtrack and nice Autumn vibe. Play as Max Caulfield, a photography senior who discovers she can rewind time. She soon finds herself investigating the mysterious disappearance of fellow student Rachel Amber, uncovering a dark side to life in Arcadia Bay. steam Plants vs zombies(PC) fun mindless little game similar to tower defense. steam Night in the Woods It is a story-focused exploration game steam. Batman Arkham games Play as Batman! Great games to play during october. Knight even takes place on Halloween Arkham collection Carrion a 2D reverse horror game where you play as an amorphous creature and kill those who imprisoned you steam Ghostbusters the closest you’ll get to a new ghostbusters movie, written by the original crew steam. Costume Quest 1 & 2 Play as kids trick or treating as they take down the evil Repugians. In combat, you transform into whatever your costume is (knight,robot) By Double fine productions Bundle Psychonauts 1 & 2 Another double fine game, with a unique art style where you play as Rasputian, a kid training to be a psychonaut at camp! Psychonauts,2 The order 1886(PS4) a victorian van-helsing esque 3rd person action adventure Red Dead Redemption:Undead nightmare great zombie dlc to Rockstar’s western game. Grim Fandango Double fine point and click game that takes place in a Día de los Muertos’ type land of the dead. steam Guacamelee 1 & 2 another Dia de los Muertos type game. This one is a Metroidvania style action platformer. 1,2. Animal Crossing This game has every season including Fall! Ghost Master You control ghosts and creatures and try to scare citizens of the town of Gravenville . steam Darkest Dungeon gothic roguelite turnbased rpg. steam Limbo black & white puzzle platformer. I don't remember it being scary so I'm putting it here for now. steam Inside Successor to Limbo steam Bioshock After a plane crash, you find yourself in an underwater 1940’s utopia that has gone horribly wrong. Great game that you’ve probably heard of already. Some scary moments but not enough to put it in scary. steam Devil May Cry started off as a resident evil game before becoming its own thing. Has a great gothic aesthetic. steam Darq Tim Burtonesque- dream like puzzle game steam. Clive Barker's Undying Step into the shoes of Patrick Galloway as you attempt to banish the evil using your arcane magic and six shooter in this older FPS. GOG Vampyr Another Vampire RPG. This is one is a bit more modern steam Dishonored You play a supernatural assassin in a bleak steampunk inspired world. steam Witcher 3 You play as professional monster hunter Geralt of Rivia tasked with finding a child of prophecy in a vast open world rich with merchant cities, pirate islands, dangerous mountain passes, and forgotten caverns to explore.Toss a coin to your Witcher! steam Dante's Inferno(PS3) 3rd person hack n slash based off the story “Inferno” BloodRayne 1 & 2 older action vampire games 1,2 Death Stranding Hideo Kojima’s twisted package delivery simulator. steam Land of the Dead: Road to Fiddler's Green Zombie game that compliments the movie Blood:Fresh supply Old boomer shooter with plenty of horror movie references. Quite fun! steam Pumpkin Jack 3D platformer where you play as the pumpkin King. steam Nightmare before Christmas (PS2) Game based off the movie Okage : Shadow King(PS2) an old JRPG. I learned pig latin from this game as a kid Evil Twin: Cyprin Chronicles (PS2) horror themed 3D platformer A plague Tale:innocence A grim tale of a girl and her younger brother steam Mummy Demastered A gothic horror metroidvania with guns steam Death’s Door An action rpg kinda similarish to Hades steam Blue Fire A 3D platformer with a dash of dark souls. steam Salt and Sanctuary It’s been called a 2D Dark souls game steam Lost in Random A Gothic fairy tale inspired action-adventure game steam Hades Not necessarily a halloween themed game, but you do fight your way out of the underworld in this rogue like steam Heavy Rain This game puts you in control of four distinct characters who are each following their own leads in a desperate search for a missing person. Can you stop the Oragami killer? steam Amid Evil from the creator of dusk, fast paced boomer shooter steam Project Zomboid top down open world zombie survival game. Has multiplayer steam Infernax A game inspired by Castelvania: Simon's Quest. Plays similarly steam Unavowed Point and click game. A demon has possessed you and used your body to tear a swath of bloodshed through New York. You are now free, but life as you knew it is over. Your only path forward is joining the Unavowed - an ancient society dedicated to stopping evil. steam Demon of Asteborg A old school looking semi linear metroidvania that will scratch that itch steam Zero Escape: The Nonary Games Kidnapped and taken to an unfamiliar location, nine people find themselves forced to participate in a diabolical Nonary Game by an enigmatic mastermind called Zero. Similar to the SAW movies with plenty of twists and turns. steam Shadow Man (remastered) An old N64 action-adventure game that got remastered. steam Maximo: Ghosts to Glory(PS2) The first 3D entry in the Ghosts n Goblins franchise. Also check out it's sequel Maximo vs. Army of Zin Graveyard Keeper A Stardew Valley type game where you manage a graveyard steam Vampire Survivors An indie smash hit that is simple but verrrrrry addictive. Move your character around the level while dealing damage to enemies and last as long as you can. steam Elden Ring Elden Ring Cursed to Golf A 2D platform golf roguelike with plenty of ghostly stuff.. steam Thymesia soulslike game steam Cult of the Lamb Lead your own cult in this unique dungeon crawler game steam The Last Spell Build by day. Horde off monsters at night in this tactical rpg steam. The House of the Dead: Remake Remake of the classic on rails shooter steam Outbound Ghost Ghost themed Paper Mario game. Recently released steam Kinda scary but not quite on the scary list- Game Description Link Hunt Showdown Hunt and kill monsters in this team-based first person shooter but be on the lookout for enemy teams steam Left 4 dead 1 & 2 You and 3 other survivors must fight your way through zombies to reach a safe house Bundle Parasite Eve 1 & 2 (PS1) It’s a well made JRPG that’s unique and does a good job blending survival horror elements with RPG aspects.not super scary but unsettling The last of us 1 & 2(PS4) A linear 3rd person shooter/survival zombie game by Naughty Dog. Little nightmares 1 & 2 puzzle platformer. Haven’t played it so I can’t tell you if it’s scary or not Bundle Dusk a fast paced retro style(3D) first person shooter. I've heard good things about this one. Steam Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines Older 3rd person Vampire RPG steam Perception you play as a blind woman exploring a mansion from her nightmares. I’m not sure how scary this is tbh, so I’m putting it here. steam What Remains of Edith Finch More story than game, this collection of tales tells the story of a doomed family. steam Paratopic buy when it goes on sale. Very short but slightly unsettling game. Play through a few times to really notice things you didn’t before steam Oxenfree A 2D Supernatural mystery graphic adventure steam Days Gone 3rd person open world zombie game with huge hordes of zombies. steam Day z older open world multiplayer game where you try to survive zombie apocalypse steam Aliens:fireteam Elite Essential left 4 dead gameplay in the Alien universe. AvP 1 & 2 are also good games steam Eversion Just a short, totally normal, cute, 2D platformer. Yep that's it. Nothing out of the ordinary happens here. Nope. steam Shadow Hearts series A horror JRPG series. I'm not sure how scary it is so I'm sticking it here 7 Days to Die 1st person open world zombie survival game. steam Inscryption horror based card game steam Back 4 blood from half of the makers of Left 4 dead, this game is like that but very slightly different. steam Gloomwood from the people who made dusk, a Victorian stealth game steam Control Won over 80 awards. Dark atmospheric third person shooter steam. Alan Wake Play as a writer fighting shadows in this Stephen King-esque type game steam The X-Files: Resist and Serve(PS2) The game is set during the seventh season of the television series, and the story is presented as three new "episodes" in which FBI Special Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully investigate mysterious deaths in Colorado, where they learn about an alien artifact used to resurrect deceased people Pathologic 1 & 2 In this old Russian first person survival game, players control one of three unique characters as they try to save a mysterious town from a deadly plague that cannot be stopped. This is a weird one with A LOT of walking. Story and atmosphere are good. 1, 2 Ghosthunter (PS2) A detective that accidently releases a lab full of ghouls and spirits must now hunt them down and shoot them with a variety of special weapons before throwing a capture grenade to catch them. Sweet Home [NES] A JRPG that mixes survival mechanics with RPG elements and puzzle solving. The first Resident Evil started out as a Sweet Home remake and you can see it from time to time. It's gory for a NES game and if you like both horror and JRPGs, you should be required by law to play it Scary: Game Description Link Resident Evil series Famous 3rd person(and some first person) zombie horror surival game series. 1,2,3, 4, 5,0, 6, 7,8 Silent Hill series 3rd person survival horror. The first game follows Harry Mason as he searches for his missing adopted daughter in the eponymous fictional American town of Silent Hill; stumbling upon a cult conducting a ritual to revive a deity it worships, he discovers her true origin. Kuon(PS2) A Fromsoftware survival horror game where you explore a haunted Japanese Mansion during the Heian period. Fatal Frame series A game where you take pictures of ghosts to vanquish them while trying to balance getting the best shot with not letting them get too close. Clock tower series Inspired by the 1985 film Phonemena, the first game is about a girl who must search a mansion for your friends while the scissorman stalks you. Haunting ground(PS2) A spiritual successor to clocktower that many consider the “true” clocktower 3. 3rd person survival horror. Rule of Rose(PS2) A 3rd person survival horror kinda like silent hill but without guns that takes place on a giant airship. Eternal Darkness(Gamecube) A 3rd person lovecraftian inspired game that messes with the player’s sanity. The Evil Within 1 & 2 3rd person survival horror games made by the creator of the early resident evil series. 1,2 Siren 1 & 2 From the developers of the first 4 Silent Hill games, these games are about sneaking by and hiding from zombieesque people stalking you. But, you have the power to tap into their eyesight meaning you can see what they see with the press of a button. Until Dawn Have you ever been watching a horror movie and thought “Dumb kids! I could survive longer than that” Well here’s your chance to test that theory. This game kinda plays like an interactive horror film where you decide what the players do. You can even play with friends. Be sure to check out the other Dark Pictures Anthology games as well. Condemned:Criminal Orgins Ever want to play a detective that is tasked with tracking down a serial killer like in ‘Silence of the Lambs’ or ‘Memories of Murder’? Well here you can. A first person game that has you explore urban environments and battling sociopaths with any melee weapon you can find. Also check out it's sequel Deadspace series Kinda like a resident evil in space, this game takes place on a mining spaceship overrun by monsters. 1,2,3. Obscure 1 & 2 A survival horror game that has co-op, you play as a group of teens who find a laboratory at their school where experiments are being done on the student body. If you like cliche Bmovie horror films, you might like this. The sequel takes place in college 1,2 Manhunt A really violent game where you control a death row prisoner and must kill gang members on camera to earn your freedom The Thing Based off of the film, the game puts you in control of a squad of guys that arrive at the outpost just days after the film ends. Cold fear an early resident evil clone that came out around the same time as RE4, it’s a survival horror that takes place on a boat. steam Alone in the Dark:The new nightmare trapped on an island solving puzzles and fighting monsters steam The Suffering 1 & 2 PS2 a prisoner on death row for murdering his ex-wife and two children, when the prison being attacked by supernatural threats from the island's past.After being freed, Torque attempts to fight his way to freedom while confronting his own personal demons, all while attempting to remember what really happened to his family. Dying Light series Parkour with zombies! 1 Fear Trilogy Horror based first person shooter with great combat where you can slow down time. bundle Dead by daylight not super scary but fun to play with friends. 4 players must team up and complete objectives while a killer tries to kill them off. steam Soma From the creators of Amnesia: The Dark Descent comes SOMA, a sci-fi horror game set below the waves of the Atlantic ocean. Struggle to survive a hostile world that will make you question your very existence. steam Amnesia: The Dark Descent Older first person survival horror steam Prey(2017) From Arkane studios, you are on a space station which has been overrun by hostile aliens and you are now being hunted. steam SubNautica not really a halloween game but has plenty of jumpscares under the sea. steam Alien Isolation Ever wondered if you would survive if you were in the Alien universe? Play and find out. steam Outlast 1st Person survival horror. I haven’t played it so i can’t really say anything else steam Doom 3 Older Doom game that cranked up the horror elements steam Return to Castle Wolfenstein This 2001 Wolfenstein game has the most horror in the series steam Darkwood a 2D top down horror game. Explore the world by day and hunker down and survive by night. steam Sanitarium this old point and click game is pretty unsettling steam Them & Us If you like old school RE style games, you might enjoy this steam Stalker: Shadow of Chernoybl older cult classic game based on the book and movie has you go into “the zone”, a very dangerous place, where you fear not only the radiation, anomalies and deadly creatures, but other S.T.A.L.K.E.R.s, who have their own goals and wishes. steam Song of Horror a 3rd person fixed camera survival horror steam Tormented Souls If you have to play one modern fixed-camera horror game(similar to RE 1) play this one. steam Echo Night series(PS1 & PS2) Earlier From Software games that have you help ghosts move on. You might notice some elements that were in From's Dark Souls games that would come later White Day Sneak into school at midnight to return your sweetheart's diary and get caught in a terrifying game of cat and mouse. Explore haunted hallways, solve classic survival horror puzzles and escape the clutches of a killer Janitor who is out for your blood. steam Phasmophobia Phasmophobia is a 4 player online co-op psychological horror. Paranormal activity is on the rise and it’s up to you and your team to use all the ghost hunting equipment at your disposal in order to gather as much evidence as you can steam THe Quarry Latest entry from Supermassive games, control the fate of 9 teenage camp counselors in this 80s slasher inspired game steam Ghostwire Tokyo From the creators of the evil within series, battle spirits in this openworld horror first person game steam Nightmare of Decay this short little indie game is like a love letter to the first 2 Resident Evil games steam Observation Duty 5 Corporate needs you to find the difference between these live camera feeds. Spot the anomalies, or die. steam Mortuary Assistant In this game you find yourself at a new job as a mortician. As it turns out, one of the dead bodies is possessed by a demon and you are now at risk for possession yourself. What a night this will be, as you perform your regular mortician duties, while also battling supernatural creatures and resisting terrible visions courtesy of your new demonic friend. Keep holy water next to your desk as you play this one ya’ll. steam Alisa Alisa is a Horror-themed Action Adventure game and a genuine throwback to the golden age of 90s 3D games. steam bonus: Haunted PS1 demo disc. They are fan-made games that have PS1 era graphics. Some games that are coming out this month: Oct 18- Ghostbusters: Spirits unleashed Oct 18- Plague Tale: requiem Oct 21- Scorn (Fleshpunk game) Oct 28- RE Village:Shadows of Rose DLC Oct 31- No more Room in Hell 2 Alright that’s about it.
